After entering his art class in Google's annual Doodle for Google contest, Byron Johnson was contacted by Google's headquarters for permission to film the class at work on the project. Google heard about Thurgood Marshall Academy from their DC personnel and sent a film crew to the school on April 9, 2008, to showcase our students working through the Doodle for Google contest. The theme for the contest is "What if...?" Students had the freedom to create their own "What if...?" scenario and were encouraged to be as creative as possible. Once they considered the question, students had to answer it in the form of a re-imagined Google logo.
When the crew arrived, Mr. Johnson's class was working on the project as a group, asking themselves, "What if all the cultures of the world were found in one city?" The students drew connections to world history and architecture as they talked about the origins of cities as well as their necessary elements. The students worked together creating an image of a truly international city in front of, behind, and out of the Google logo. Groups were interviewed about their team design and individuals that had their own Google doodles were able to explain their personal "What if..."
