TMA Students Selected for National Youth Leadership Mission

Congratulations to Abdi Hashi and Demetrius Suggs for being selected to represent Thurgood Marshall Academy and the Washington, DC, metropolitan area at the Anti-Defamation League's (ADL) National Youth Leadership Mission November 16-19, 2008. Abdi and Demetrius are the sixth and seventh Thurgood Marshall Academy students selected to attend the Mission, which brings over 100 high school students from across the country together to learn about combating hate, prejudice, and bigotry in their communities.

The National Youth Leadership Mission will be held at the US Holocaust Memorial Musem, where students will focus on the history of the Holocaust, the nature of bigotry and prejudice, and will have the opportunity to hear directly from Holocaust survivors. After the Mission, Abdi and Demetrius will participate in both structured and informal follow-up activities throughout the year to build upon and reinforce the messages of the MIssion. Abdi and Demetrius will bring the lessons they learn at the Mission back to Thurgood Marshall Academy and the other DC communities they are part of.

Practical Geometry

Students in Lauren Peterson's Honors Geometry class had a chance to apply their geometry skills to Thurgood Marshall Academy's new garden. Planted by the school's environmental advocacy club, Plant It Earth, the math students measured flower beds, calculated the volume and surface area, and learned about the garden itself from Plant It Earth's advisors, Sam Ullery and Sarah Johnson. Students also had a chance to sample basil and (if they were adventurous) hot peppers from the garden.

Become a TMA Mentor!

For just five hours each month, you can mentor a Thurgood Marshall Academy student. Our mentor program pairs a student with a professional adult who can offer support, advice, and guidance.

Mentoring can improve a student's attitude towards school, enhance his/her confidence, and will introduce the opportunity to interact with a positive role model.

Thurgood Marshall Academy makes mentoring easy. Throughout the year, we offer training and support for our mentors, plan interactive events for mentors and students, and organize happy hours for our volunteers. One Saturday morning each month, Thurgood Marshall Academy mentors and students gather to participate in a variety of fun and enriching activities. Past Mentor Day events have included:

• Basketball games
• Ice skating in the sculpture garden
• IMAX movies
• Bowling
• College campus visits
