Arne Duncan, US Secretary of Education, Visits TMA

In honor of President Obama's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, on Monday, January 19, 2009, Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education, visited Thurgood Marshall Academy, for a College Scholarship Application Event for our juniors and seniors. Thurgood Marshall Academy faculty and staff along with volunteers from the law firm of Williams & Connolly and members of the Young Lawyers for Obama organization, as well as Mr. Duncan and his staff, helped seniors, juniors and their parents complete scholarship applications to support enrollment in post-secondary education institutions. Mr. Duncan took a tour of the school led by Mache Chase, Asia Tyler, Michelyn Bell, and Markus Batchelor.  After the tour Mr. Duncan worked one-on-one with Michion Redmond on a scholarship application.

TMA Debate Team Competes in Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Debate Tournament

Thurgood Marshall Academy's Debate Team competed in Omega Psi Phi fraternity's debate tournament on January 17 at the George Washington University. The TMA debaters did a great job and many received monetary prizes for their arguments. Debate results are below:

• Markus Batchelor - Top Speaker
• Mache Chase - 4th Place Speaker
• Rashada Coton, Mache Chase, Justine Kelley - 2nd Place Team
• Markus Batchelor, Akasha Rodgers, Shamir Fauntleroy - 3rd Place Team
• Ms. Garcia, Mr. London - Top Coaches
• India Young, the Team's newest member, rose to the occasion by filling-in for a student who was unable to attend.

The next debate tournament is on February 7 at Roosevelt High School.

TMA Basketball Update

Both the girls' and boys' basketball teams earned their second wins each after games on Thursday, January 8.

The TMA Boys' Varsity Basketball Team earned their second win by defeating Maya Angelou Evans by a score of 52.37. Junior James Trice led with 22 points and freshman Demetrius Beggerman scored eight points.

The TMA Girls' Varsity Basketball Team also earned their second win of the season against Maya Angelou Shaw. TMA was able to build an early lead, finishing the game 31-6. This is a big boost for the Warriors, after several close games against IDEA PCS, Cesar Chavez, and Ideal. Coach Somerville and Coach Alston are very proud of the major improvements the girls have made this season. Junior Stephanie Harris led the team in scoring with 11 points. Co-captains Starleana Stackhouse and Ya'Vondai Covington contributed with outstanding defensive efforts. Other scorers for TMA included Chanae Watson, Melody Holloway, and Raynell Cox. Seniors Michelyn Bell and Christine Short both added three steals each, and junior Jasmine McPhaul contributed two rebounds.
